Tree Preservation Orders (TPO’s) and Conservation Areas - Many trees in the UK enjoy statutory protection and severe penalties can be incurred for damage to them. John Booth Ltd has many years experience in the administration of the TPO system and is able to produce detailed specifications for tree work applications. We are also able to make representation to local planning authorities to support objections to the making of inappropriate TPO’s or to represent tree owners involved in TPO appeals.

Trees and Development - Trees are a ‘material consideration’ in the development process. This means that Local Planning Authorities (LPA’s) have a duty to consider them when determining any planning application. LPA’s will frequently require that a tree survey is submitted with any planning application and may refuse to register an application until such a survey is provided

By carefully considering and making provision for trees in the context of a new site layout, trees can add maturity and value to a development. However, poor planning can result in unnecessary tree loss, inappropriate tree retention and undesirable living conditions for both trees and people.

The UK planning system is complicated; however, we have considerable experience in this area. We understand how to progress things quickly by anticipating the requirements of an LPA so as to ensure, as far as possible, both a swift determination and a positive outcome.

John Booth Ltd is regularly instructed by both developers and LPA’s who are keen to ensure a satisfactory outcome from the planning process ie achieving an appropriate balance between tree retention and realising a sites development potential. All such work is carried out in accordance with the guiding principles of British Standard 5837 ‘Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction – Recommendations’,

Services to support Planning Applications can include –

  • Tree Constraints Plans (TCP’s)
  • Tree Protection Plans (TPP’s)
  • Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA)
  • Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS)
